En este artículo se van a examinar y anotar los bienes y servicios más relevantes que pueden aportar el medio marino y sus ecosistemas con el objetivo de realzar la importancia de proteger a las comunidades marinas y explotarlas de manera sostenible. Toda la información aportada quiere ser de utilidad para crear conciencia de la importancia de cuidar los océanos y actuar en consecuencia. Todos los bienes y servicios ecológicos, alimentarios, industriales, socioeconómicos y culturales junto con las consecuencias de no proteger los océanos para el bienestar humano, agregan un valor incalculable al medio marino, que hacen reconsiderar cómo lo explotamos y abusamos de él hoy en día.

La cantidad de bienes y servicios que los océanos brindan a la sociedad es enorme y este artículo es una pequeña muestra de todo el contenido que podrá estar disponible a través de las charlas y plataforma online de AMar.

Los océanos regulan el sistema terrestre, controlando la concentración de diferentes gases y el clima debido a su acción como disipador de calor. A su vez, también retrasan los efectos plenos del cambio climático, actuando como el mayor depósito de carbono. Además, son los responsables de una gran cantidad de producción primaria en la Tierra, permiten biorremediar desechos, regulan el ciclo del agua, el ciclo de nutrientes y la aparición de enfermedades y plagas. Además, tienen un efecto en la prevención de perturbaciones y catástrofes ya que protegen contra inundaciones, avalanchas, desprendimientos de rocas y tormentas.

En cuanto a los recursos vivos y no vivos, los océanos son una gran fuente de alimento (incluyendo pescado, carne, raíces, semillas, algas, especias…). El pescado es la fuente individual más importante de proteínas de alta calidad, ya que proporciona aproximadamente el 16% de la proteína animal consumida por la población mundial (FAO). Aproximadamente la mitad de la población mundial vive en zonas costeras y alrededor de mil millones de personas dependen del pescado como su principal fuente de proteínas (FAO). Por otro lado, la biotecnología marina ha demostrado el enorme potencial de los sistemas marinos y los organismos vivos para producir productos innovadores para las industrias de la medicina, salud y belleza. Además, muchas industrias dependen del medio marino para obtener recursos como el petróleo, el gas y agregados marinos, entre otras materias primas. Por último, los océanos ofrecen un enorme potencial para las tecnologías de energía renovable, como los parques eólicos marinos o los dispositivos de energía mareomotriz del oleaje y las mareas.

Respecto a otros temas, los océanos proporcionan bienes y servicios sociales y económicos muy importantes para la sociedad actual. El turismo costero y marino es una gran industria que sustenta a gran parte de las economías regionales. A su vez, existe una gran cantidad de actividades de ocio y esparcimiento que dependen del mar (buceo, pesca con anzuelo, pesca submarina, snorkel, avistamiento de ballenas, etc.) así como rutas seguras y regulares para el comercio marítimo de mercancías y pasajeros (más del 90% de todo el comercio mundial se transporta por mar).

Además, existe una gran cantidad de lugares de trabajo relacionados con el sector marino y que dependen de unos ecosistemas sanos. Las aguas costeras sustentan 28,3 millones de puestos de trabajo y generan 54.000 millones de dólares en bienes y servicios al año (U.S. EPA). Se ha estimado que los océanos contribuyen con el 60% del valor económico total de la biosfera. 

Aparte de eso, también se tienen que considerar los servicios culturales, el patrimonio y los beneficios cognitivos de identidad de los océanos. Finalmente, hay otros beneficios especulativos aún no descubiertos que podrían tener una influencia importante en la vida humana en un futuro.

Teniendo en cuenta todos estos puntos, 

¿Cuáles son las consecuencias de no proteger y de no cuidar de los océanos?

Mencionar los factores negativos de no cuidar el medio marino y de sobreexplotarlo también puede ayudar a agregar valor a la planificación para su conservación.

El primer impacto a gran escala en la vida en la tierra son los efectos del cambio climático, que hoy en día parecen no ser suficientemente valorados debido a que sus efectos son a largo plazo, entre otros (leer artículo anterior sobre negacionismo).

Se conoce que el cambio climático afectará la función de los ecosistemas e indirectamente al bienestar humano, a su seguridad y a la prosperidad económica. Estos impactos involucrarán procesos físicos que aumentarán la frecuencia y la severidad de las tormentas, el nivel del mar se elevará y las corrientes oceánicas cambiarán terminando con eventos climáticos extremos. En lo que respecta a los intereses humanos, estas variaciones dañarán las infraestructuras costeras, las viviendas, el transporte, la producción de alimentos, el turismo y las industrias recreativas. En cuanto al turismo, la pérdida de biodiversidad y hábitats marinos se traduciría en una disminución de sitios de interés, clientes y lugares de trabajo. 

Finalmente, ocurrirán cambios biológicos que involucrarán cambios en la distribución de algunas especies (las especies nativas disminuirán o se extinguirán), provocando pérdida de biodiversidad. La productividad disminuirá y esto conducirá a la pérdida de alimentos para las especies marinas y, en consecuencia, para los humanos. Se sabe que un aumento de 2ºC podría provocar una pérdida del 15-40% de la biodiversidad. Viendo la crisis sanitaria global, no podemos olvidar que la pérdida de biodiversidad aumenta el riesgo de aparición de enfermedades infecciosas transmisibles al ser humano.

¡Pero no queremos eso! ¿Qué podemos hacer nosotros?

Es necesario considerar que la conservación y el desarrollo no se oponen, ambos son partes esenciales de un proceso fundamental. Actualmente, poco a poco se empieza a reconocer el papel de los océanos y su valor en el sustento de la vida humana. Sin embargo, es necesario mostrar una alternativa creíble y deseable para que todos participen en su conservación. Es necesario aunar objetivos ecológicos, económicos y sociales para mantener los ecosistemas sanos y, en consecuencia, el bienestar de la población. Pero seamos realistas, todos sabemos que esto es complicado.

La creciente presión de la sociedad no permite un plan de conservación eficiente. Se requiere un marco de políticas coordinado, integrado e intersectorial con una estrategia de enfoque a largo plazo, difícil de implementar y llevar a la práctica. 

Sin embargo, el cuidado de los ecosistemas lo están logrando pequeños grupos: empresas individuales, comunidades o ciudades; como es el caso de AMar. La conciencia y la preocupación por el bienestar de nuestro planeta tiene que ser una rutina de nuestro día a día y en AMar vamos a ayudarte a conseguirlo. 

Vivir de manera sostenible depende de la aceptación de vivir en armonía con las demás personas y con la naturaleza, no hay necesidad de extraer de ella lo que no puede reponer. Se deben de explotar los recursos renovables de manera viable, manteniendo su renovación y reducir el agotamiento de los recursos no renovables explotándolos de manera sostenible. Esto implica adoptar estilos de vida que respeten los límites de los recursos naturales y esto se puede hacer sin rechazar los enormes beneficios que pueden aportar.

Ahora, la pregunta es: 

¿la mayoría de las personas quieren y/o podrán adoptar un estilo de vida más sostenible? Y si no es así, 

¿cuál tiene que ser la situación crítica a la que deben llegar nuestros ecosistemas para que las personas consideren cambiar sus acciones y estilos de vida? 

Visto que los seres humanos tienen la tendencia de actuar solo cuando la situación es crítica…

Las evidencias de una mala dirección del desarrollo de la sociedad son evidentes y existe la necesidad urgente de un cambio. El punto positivo es que estamos en el momento en que los impactos sobre los ecosistemas aún son reversibles. Por lo tanto, es importante actuar lo antes posible y para ello,
